South Africa’s Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, has stated that the country’s legal case accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza has “global support.” Last week, South African lawyers presented arguments at the International Court of Justice alleging that Israel’s bombardment of Gaza constituted genocide. Turkey, Jordan, Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, Pakistan, and Malaysia are among the states that have publicly supported South Africa’s application, as well as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Israel strongly denies the accusation, asserting its right to defend itself against Hamas attacks. South Africa argues that while Israel had the right to respond, its actions were disproportionate and led to too many civilian casualties. The case is likely to take several years to reach a final decision.
